A simple, honest guide for anyone visiting Kashi who wants to buy a genuine Banarasi saree, without getting confused by fake silk, inflated prices, or commission driven shops.
Visiting Kashi? Don't buy a saree until you read this
If you are planning a trip to Varanasi, chances are a Banarasi saree is already on your shopping list. It should be. Few things carry as much history and craftsmanship as a saree woven on the banks of the Ganga.
But here is the honest truth. Most visitors cannot tell a genuine Banarasi silk saree from a machine made copy. And in a city full of shops, that gap gets used against you more often than you would like.
This guide is here to close that gap, before you even land in Varanasi.
Why this guide exists
Varanasi sees lakhs of tourists and pilgrims every year, and a large number of local shops know this well. Many visitors end up paying silk prices for polyester blends, or get taken to a shop simply because a guide or driver earns a commission there.
None of this is said to scare you. It is said because a little knowledge before you shop changes everything. Once you know what to look for, no shopkeeper can talk you into something that is not genuine.
What makes Weave 365 different
Weave 365 works directly with weaver families in Varanasi, not through layers of middlemen. Over the years, we have helped visitors from across India and abroad shop with confidence, by teaching them what genuine Banarasi work actually looks and feels like.
We are not asking you to buy from us. We are asking you to shop smart, wherever you buy.
Three ways to check if a saree is genuine
Here are three simple checks you can do yourself, right there in the shop.
- The touch test
Pure silk feels warm and slightly rough at first touch, and turns smooth as you run your hand over it. Polyester and art silk feel slippery and cool from the very first touch, and stay that way.
- The reverse side check
Turn the saree over. On a genuine handwoven Banarasi piece, the pattern on the back looks almost as neat as the front, with visible thread work. On power loom copies, the back usually looks messy or has loose, uneven threads.
- The zari shine
Real zari, especially old style zari, has a soft, slightly dull gold shine. Fake zari made from plastic coated thread looks unnaturally bright and shiny, almost like tinsel.
These three checks alone will save you from most common mistakes. There are a few more detailed checks, including the burn test and how to read a Silk Mark or GI tag, which are covered in our complete guide.
