Banarasi Saree Buying Guide for Kashi Visitors

Weave 365 Editorial Jul 5, 2026 7 Minutes Read

A simple, honest guide for anyone visiting Kashi who wants to buy a genuine Banarasi saree, without getting confused by fake silk, inflated prices, or commission driven shops.

Visiting Kashi? Don't buy a saree until you read this

If you are planning a trip to Varanasi, chances are a Banarasi saree is already on your shopping list. It should be. Few things carry as much history and craftsmanship as a saree woven on the banks of the Ganga.

But here is the honest truth. Most visitors cannot tell a genuine Banarasi silk saree from a machine made copy. And in a city full of shops, that gap gets used against you more often than you would like.

This guide is here to close that gap, before you even land in Varanasi.

Why this guide exists

Varanasi sees lakhs of tourists and pilgrims every year, and a large number of local shops know this well. Many visitors end up paying silk prices for polyester blends, or get taken to a shop simply because a guide or driver earns a commission there.

None of this is said to scare you. It is said because a little knowledge before you shop changes everything. Once you know what to look for, no shopkeeper can talk you into something that is not genuine.

What makes Weave 365 different

Weave 365 works directly with weaver families in Varanasi, not through layers of middlemen. Over the years, we have helped visitors from across India and abroad shop with confidence, by teaching them what genuine Banarasi work actually looks and feels like.

We are not asking you to buy from us. We are asking you to shop smart, wherever you buy.

Three ways to check if a saree is genuine

Here are three simple checks you can do yourself, right there in the shop.

  1. The touch test

Pure silk feels warm and slightly rough at first touch, and turns smooth as you run your hand over it. Polyester and art silk feel slippery and cool from the very first touch, and stay that way.

  2. The reverse side check

Turn the saree over. On a genuine handwoven Banarasi piece, the pattern on the back looks almost as neat as the front, with visible thread work. On power loom copies, the back usually looks messy or has loose, uneven threads.

  3. The zari shine

Real zari, especially old style zari, has a soft, slightly dull gold shine. Fake zari made from plastic coated thread looks unnaturally bright and shiny, almost like tinsel.

These three checks alone will save you from most common mistakes. There are a few more detailed checks, including the burn test and how to read a Silk Mark or GI tag, which are covered in our complete guide.

Shops we personally recommend in Varanasi

We keep this list small on purpose, because trust matters more to us than sending you to every shop that asks to be listed.

What visitors say

"I had no idea how to check if a saree was real silk before this guide. It made my shopping in Varanasi so much easier, and I did not feel cheated even once." Guest from Mumbai

"We were pilgrims visiting for Kashi Vishwanath darshan, and picked up two sarees using the tips from this guide. Both turned out exactly as promised." Guest from Bangalore

Frequently Asked Questions

Check the touch, the reverse side weave, and the zari shine. Genuine silk feels warm and slightly rough at first touch, the back of the saree looks nearly as neat as the front, and real zari has a soft gold shine rather than a bright plastic like shine. Our free guide covers these checks in detail, along with the burn test and how to read a Silk Mark or GI tag.

Prices are rarely fixed in our trusted shops, and some negotiation is normal. However, prices at genuine, weaver linked shops tend to be fair from the start, since they are not padding the price to cover a guide or driver commission. This is one reason we recommend only visiting verified shops.

Yes, most established shops in Varanasi, including our recommended partner shops, offer domestic and international shipping. It is a good idea to confirm shipping charges and delivery time before you pay.

Weave 365 works directly with weaver families in Varanasi and offers a free saree buying guide to help visitors shop with confidence, whether they buy from us or from any other shop in the city. We also work with businesses through wholesale, affiliate, white label, and partner programs.

Simply share your name, WhatsApp number, and email through the form on this page. The guide is sent instantly, and if you share your travel dates, we will also message you once you are in Varanasi with genuine shop recommendations nearby.
